pps.- it *did* go thru the partition recovery wizard once.... it scanned, identified the partitions correctly and terminated. That's how I got from "unallocated space" to "valid" partitions. So is the FAT still messed up??

If it tells you a partition will be deleted - that is because you haven't ticked one of the existing ones .
um....I"m not trying to argue, but no, I ticked both. Went thru it again just to make sure, and same message as above. I'm trying a "full scan"; see if that makes any diff....

Keep us updated with the fiull scan.
Then see if windows can see it from boot disc - and give startup repair a go.
I learned that it takes a looooooooooooong time to scan 1Tb.
...but after the scan completed I did get the "apply" button and it "completed 3 of 4 operations and I can "see" the 2 NTFS partitions in PW. Unfortunately, that was 3 in the morning and I'm out of town the next couple days. Once I get back I'll report back. Thanks again....
