    Installation Problems

Under my maintenance contract I had a new screen and motherboard installed on my Inspiron 6400 Laptop. That was followed a week later by my hard drive. On the new hard drive I installed Vista followed by an upgrade to Windows 7. I'm now having problems with my laptop keyboard not working. I've downloaded the drivers, but nothing seems to help.

Should I reformat and start over as I believe I failed to install the drivers in the proper order.

If so, how do I reformat my hard drive with Windows 7 now installed?

If you want to start over, you must boot up with the DVD,choose custom/clean install. Then you choose the advanced option and choose format.

Thank you for contacting me. What went wrong with the install. If you do a clean install it should have worked. Tell me what happened.

Can you do a Repair Install with the keyboard functionality you have?

It will refresh the installation of all drivers.

It just takes inserting the DVD and running an Upgrade install from Win7 desktop.

You can use the onscreen keyboard if necessary to get it started: Type without using the keyboard (On-Screen Keyboard)

If you had all this stuff replaced, make sure the connector for the motherboard was reinstalled correctly. They probably took it out to replace some items and perhaps did not plug it back in correctly...

If you do not know how to remove it to check, there is probably a diagram on the dell site explaining how to remove the keyboard.

Of course, whatever happened to your screen and motherboard may have damaged your keyboard.
