Bit of a silly question I suppose, but... I'm moving from my old system which I'd upgraded to Win7 (32 bit) in October, to a new 64 bit system (both Home Premium)
To transfer, I obviously use the 32 bit Easy Transfer application out of the old system, correct? Thanks.
You need to use the easy transfer in Win 7, not the older Vista system.
Yes, something like that just dawned on me moments after posting, "Say, the ET download is for upgrading to Win7, I'm going Win7 32 to 64, now what??"

Just a word of caution. WET is really cool, it will transfer everything, desktop, cookies, favorites mail. I used and liked it very much. There have been several complaints, howver that things got screwed. My advice, use it, but make another back up just in case.. I want you to have a Happy New Year and not start off with regrets, saying that "I should have, etc". All the best to you.

Easy transfer works for 32 bit to 64, but not the reverse.
Easy file transfer is for backing up your personal data and settings. It will do the same for Win 7 to Win 7 as it would for Vista to Win 7.
Don't expect too much, it will not move your programs.
Ty Saltgrass for refreshing my memory. Be sure to have all your cd's and key numbers when you reinstall.
You can back up your User file and get everything needed including the hidden appdata files which hold your settings (Note: importing settings is a corruption path to the fresh OS).
I also back up windows/system32/drivers so if any are missing in Device Manager in new install, only need to browse to that folder to pick them up.
I personally would not count on Easy Transfer, especially since it takes less time to drag and drop any user file onto external.

WET ,,, when it works is great, and it does work....
However,,,
There are occasions (it's random, no way to tell you what those are) that it flat out doesn't work.
It stalls out, or takes fffffooorrrreeeevvvvvveeerrrrrrr to finish. So, use at your own risk.
Sometimes it is just plain better to drag and drop.
I also, can't remember a time when I lost any data, even if it did crap out, but,,,,,,,,,,,,, never take a chance on data loss. Backups are essential. Like I always say,,,, You have either lost data or will lose data, there is no in between.
I tried using Easy Transfer one time (not the Win 7 version) and selected what I wanted to transfer and it took over and started transferring whatever it wanted including the Recycle Bin. I stopped it before it got too far and was able to recover.
Yeah, I ran a preview WET analysis on my current system and was not surprised to see my own user at ~25GB (mainly photos and music).
I was however surprised as I drilled into the detail under my user profile that my Outlook 2007's PST file's folder was not shown as included(?!). That was strange, or does it handle that some other magical way...?
I was also a bit stunned to see I believe "Shared resources" at ~172 GB, for a total estimated transfer file of ~192 GB(!) Hmmm...that seems like a bunch. Any ideas what I'm not understanding, or what that's about...?
I do know that when I upgraded the current system from XP to Win7, I was generally pleased with WET's performance, including having Outlook back exactly as it was pre-upgrade.
