    Installing on 3rd party pre-formatted NTFS 3.1

I've yet to move to 7 & was planning a dual boot with XP. As far as I can establish, XP, Vista & 7 all use NTFS version 3.1, however I've heard stories of incompatibility (though never specific & nothing mentioned on MS/TechNet etc).

...I usually do clean installs on partitions I've created using Partition Magic 8 (run from a CD so it is NOT installed & has no compatibility issues with the OS!), which also uses NTFS 3.1

Does anyone know if Win7 will install on a pre-formatted partition or does it insist on performing its own format which in siome way differs from the standard NTFS 3.1 spec?

The reason it is important is partly that I wish to continue using the Symantic version of Ghost (2003/v8) that runs from a boot disk, but also because if there is a difference in Win7 formatting and associated compatibility issues I wish to know exactly what this is so that I can both further my understanding and make properly informed decisions!

    Many thanks in advance

Does Ghost say it is compatible with Win 7? Programs like anti-virus or registry checkers, or backup software, REALLY need to be Win 7 compatible.

The Win 7 install will give you the option of creating and formatting partitions. If it doesn't, hit shift+F10 and use Diskpart to do the same.

I do not really know what version of NTFS is being used, so I can't answer that question.

Thanks for the speedy reply Saltgrass

As this version of Ghost is never actually installed, compatability with the OS itself shouldn't come into it - only the actual disk formatting/file system (this is one of the advantages of using this method).

Logic would say that as Ghost is compatible with NTFS 3.1 & Win7 claims to still use this format there shouldn't be an issue, but MS being MS...!

If anyone is 'in the know' confirmation (one way or the other) would be much appreciated; tia

Windows 7 is using 3.1 and not using 3.1. NTFS 6.0 (internal version) is what Windows Vista and 7 are using, however, it is fully backwards compatible.

Thanks logicearth, I'm fairly confident it'll work, but (mainly out of curiosity!) am going to look into 'internal versions' to see what limitations (if any) Win7 might suffer if loaded in a partition pre-formatted with NTFS 3.1 of older internal version. I suspect the newer versions might simply allow for ever increasing disk sizes.

    Thanks again
