    My question:

I installed FLAC Frontend and Tester on my computer running Windows 7-64 by going to this site:

FLAC Installer for Windows | Weekends Start on Thursday - The Website of Mike Wren

Careful! There is at least one typo, so if you cut and paste to your DOS prompt, you will get an error message. Make sure everything is spelled correctly. Also, some lines appear as two on that page when they should be typed as single lines in the prompt. Other than that, the instructions are correct.

The boldface text is quoted (with some minor corrections from me) from that site:

To Install flac frontend on Windows 7 or Vista 64 bit you will need to download MSCOMTL.OXC and then copy it into C:\Windows\SysWOW64 and then register it.Browse your command prompt shortcut via Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Command Prompt. Right click the Command Prompt icon and choose and Run as administrator. Click Yes to tell UAC you really want to run it.

When the window opens with your command prompt type this in:

    cd C:\Windows\SysWOW64

The prompt should change to: C:\Windows\SysWOW64

    Then type:

    regsvr32 mscomctl.ocx

If you get a Window that pops up and says, "DllRegisterServer in mscomctl.ocx succeeded" then click OK and try the frontend install again. You may get a run time error 57 when trying to decode flac files you will then need to run flac frontend as administrator, just right click on the flac icon on the desktop select properties, the flac frontend Properties dialog windows opens then click onAdvanced then check the run as administrator box and your all done.

    =============

    To download MSCOMCTL.OCX, go to:

    Mising MSCOMCTL.OCX Library File

Right-click "Download MSCOMCTL.OCX" link and choose "Save Link As"

    Copy to C:\Windows\SysWOW64

then follow registration instructions I've quoted at the top of this message.

    Results and limitations:

FLAC Tester works on Windows 7-64.

FLAC Frontend decodes, but will not encode. When clicking Encode or Help buttons, you will get a brief DOS prompt. When it disappears, nothing will have happened.

Dragging and dropping files into Frontend is not possible with W 7 (at least I haven't been able to do it).

You can also search for and download Traders Little Helper. This utility is extremely helpful. It checks, encodes, reads and generates checksums, etc. It works with FLAC, APE, WAV, and other formats. I've downloaded it to my new machine running W 7, and dragging works as it did in XP.

    Good luck.
