upgrade version on a new hard drive and ?? about space

I installed Win 7 home premium from an Ultimate RC and backed up my data. Now when I go to restore my data I get a message that I ran out of room on my hard drive. How is this possible when it's the same hard drive I backed up from?

If I buy a new hard drive and have the WIn 7 upgrade DVD, do I have to install Vista first, then Win 7?

It's likely you have the windows.old folder with all files from the RC in your new Win7 root.

It may be faster to move your files from there, then delete that folder using Disk Cleanup.

To answer your other question, you don't need to put XP/Vista back on to use Upgrade version on a new or formatted HD, just use one of the workarounds here: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

When I move the folder I get a message that some files need permission to move them. This is so annoying!! I have UAC all the way down.

Are you trying to move files from the windows.old folder into place? Try this:
