HOW do I REPAIR with only an upgrade disc

I am having major WINDOWS 7 installation problems.
I suspect I have somehow corrupted original Windows files and several people have suggested doing a REPAIR from original installation discs.

My original 'installation disc' for VISTA was an upgrade of WINDOWS XP and does not have a repair feature. It just offers "Upgrade" or "Custom Installation".

What and how do I repair my now destroyed Windows files. I have seemingly lost 20 gigs of hard drive after one failed install and WINDOWS 7 now no longer seems to think I have an appropriate hard drive or enough free space (I have almost 50 gigs worth now).

The repair is performing an upgrade-in-place of Windows 7 over the same version.

You may want to run the Win7 Disk Cleanup utility before trying it. You can use it to get rid of memory dump files, and even windows.old, if you have somehow created it.

Can you boot into either OS?

If so, please post back a screenshot of the full Disk management drive map, using Snipping tool in Start Menu attaching file with paper clip in reply box.

If you can't boot Win7, boot the Win7 DVD, select Repair my Computer, then see if it discovers an installation to repair and accept the repair. If that doesn't start it, or even if it doesn't find an installation, click through to Startup repair and run up to 3 separate times with reboot to try to start Win7.

If you can get to the Win7 desktop, then run a Repair Install

If you have corrupted files, you may try opening an administrative command window and type:

sfc /scannow

to repair installed files.

If you are having boot problems, can you hit F8 doing startup and select Repair? If you can not, you will probalby have to follow one of the earlier posts about obtaining a DVD or Repair CD.

I'm trying to fix my brother's friend's laptop - my suspicion is he dropped it - the hard disc is almost certainly where the problem is. That said, I hooked it up to my desktop and it's "usable" in the sense that I can access the repair tools via my W7 OEM disc to try and run utilities on it....
