32 Bit Software on 64 Bit OS

Hi all,

Hope you can help with this
i have just started to build my new laptop which is Windows 7 64 Bit.
i am now in the process of installing the software i require on the new Laptop.

Some of the software i am installing is

SQL Server 2005 32 Bit
MS Office 2007 32 Bit
Visual Studio 2005 32 Bit.

The issue i am having is that Windows Update (Windows 7 64 Bit) is not picking up that these Version of the software need to be patched.

I know for a fact that each of the above have several Service Packs plus numerous Security updates which are not being picked up by the new machine.

is there a way to install a 32 bit version of Windows update to allow these Microsoft Products to be brought up to date. Failing that i will have to install Windows 7 32 bit (The new laptop came with 64 bit pre-installed)

As it stands now this is not a viable solution as there are too many issues now and going forward if i am not able to keep the software up to date which is a massive security risk for my company and our clients.

We must use these 32 bit versions of the software above as this is what our Clients use.

Any help greatly appreciated.

please note on a new installation it can take days before windows update has your pc fully updated, this is natural, as far as i know windows update should be handling those programs even though they are 32 bit but since i don't use them i can't verify that however here are some things you may want to look into.

Download - Personal (PSI) - Vulnerability Scanning - Secunia.com
Best Free Software Update Monitor
TrueUpdate | Indigo Rose Software

i hope that one of these can get things sorted out for you.

Thanks for your reply

I dont think this is the case as one of junior Developer did a Proof of Concept on this about a month ago. The Windows 7 Machine has been up since then and he has recieved no updates for any 32 bit Microsoft Software Products. (He did not spot that this had happened and gave the go ahead for us start switching our machines over.)

In relation to your final point i need updates from Microsoft so i am not sure if any other updating software will manage this effectively for us.

you could always update those programs separately but i understand in a corporate environment that may not be feasible.

The Junior Developer also Built a Vista 64 bit Machine with the same 32 Bit Software on it and this Machine has received the relevant updates from Microsoft Update.

Maybe there is an Add-on i need for Windows 7 to get it to do this

try this
Windows provides a built-in troubleshooter that can automatically find and fix some common problems with Windows Update.
  • Open the Windows Update troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, click Fix problems with Windows Update.

i have sorted it out, it was a setting on Windows Update: In the Section "Your Recieve Updates" You need to click on the Hyper Link here. Once i did this it went and found over 50 updates and Service Packs

Thanks agains for all your help
