    Reclaim Partition after Install?


    First, I have to give kudos to this EXCELLENT resource! Thanks!

    I have two partitions on my HDD ... p1 has current WXP Pro and p2 is an old vista test install that I just never did blow away (or use). Ultimately my goal is to have W7 installed on p1 and p2 for use as "play area". I'm debating between two options:

    1...
    Install W7 on p2, get it all running while I have a working WXP install. Once all is well and proggies installed, etc., turf p1 to reclaim disk space and re-create p2.

    2...
    Clone my XP from p1 to p2 (kinda having a dual boot XP/XP), install W7 on p1. Once all is well and proggies installed, etc., turn off the XP from boot options and leave that second partition as is for testing playground again.

    Is one option less risky than or preferred over the other?

    You can use free Partition Wizard bootable CD to delete Vista partition, copy XP into that space.

    Next boot Win7 DVD to custom Install Win7 to old XP partition, using Drive Tools to delete, recreate and format partition first.

    Win7 will configure the dual boot correctly as last installed OS. This will later save trouble moving Win7 to first partition space.

    gregrocker -- thanks very much for the help! Sorry I did not reply sooner. Once I got things installed I was so busy getting my proggies back and customizing W7 that I forgot. I gotta say W7 is fantastic!

    Also thanks to all that set up and maintain these forums! They are an excellent resource and provide help in clear english that is easy to understand. Keep up the excellent work!
