Must I type in my old XP product key to upgrade?

Hello everyone. This is my 1st post at your site.
I currently have XP Home installed & I'm confused reading through these as to if I can purchase an Upgrade or not. The answer seems to be YES, but it's not clear how to validate my current version of XP Home.I am aware that in doing a clean install I will be wiping out everything on my hard drive & have to re-install all programs. I have a back-up system for all data.

Not long ago I purchased a new computer & re-installed this version of XP. Upon registration I needed to make a call to Microsoft & it only took a few minutes to do so. Is there a point in the installation where I must type in my old XP product key, or something like that? I don't think they just trust everyone, do they?:)

Boot the Win7 DVD - it will scan your HD, see XP and allow Upgrade version key.

You can then use Custom>Drive Tools to delete, repartition as you desire, and format before install.

If you pre-format before booting DVD, use one of these workarounds: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version
