Windows 7: Indexing (ins and outs)

Indexing (ins and outs)

I've not been able to find an answer anywhere on this whole issue. I looked for days.

It seems by default, that upon Windows 7 install, "all" partitions on the boot device have the checkmark by (properties) "allow this drive to have its contents indexed in addition to file properties".

We also have the INDEXING OPTIONS control panel setup.

Then on PERSONALIZATION, under "turn features on/off" we have INDEXING SERVICE (UNchecked - I think this is XP's "old" concept of indexing) and WINDOWS SEARCH (checked - I assume this is VISTA/7 incarnation of indexing).

One other problem has cropped up. When I install WLMail (will do shortly), by default a new entry in INDEXING OPTIONS shows up called WLMail. In the upper pane, it is checked. When I (last time on prior Windows 7 install) changed the default location for the folders for WLMail to my D drive, there seems to be no way to DELETE the entry (WLMail upper pane) from INDEXING OPTIONS. I can uncheck it, but it always stays there.

How does indexing work (interplay of options)

Do the drive properties indexing BOX need to be CHECKED for indexing CONTENTS of files on those drives? Or, is this above and beyond simply setting it up in INDEXING OPTIONS? It does NOT seem that having the DRIVE checked for indexing will, automatically, index that WHOLE drive. It seems the INDEXING OPTIONS files/folders/suffixes control that. But, if I were to try to index CONTENTS of files/folders, does that checkmark NEED to be there for the DRIVE (properties)?

Please discuss all the combinations of interplay between all the places that seem related to indexing for Windows 7.
