Error Message Follows File Loading

I've got several old astronomy programs that will only run under windows xp. I have new Toshiba laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit on a Pentium dual core cpu with 4gb of ram.
Using Windows 7 I created a new partion, an F: drive.
Following the dual boot setup procedure, I'm starting from the dvd drive with a genuine windows xp sp2 disc.
The system tells me to press any key to boot from the dvd drive, when I do, I get the message "windows setup" at the top of the blue screen and after a couple of messges about raid drivers, "Setup is loading files (list of files loading) at the bottom of the screen on a white background. I then get a message "windows is starting"
After that I get a screen that says "A problem has been tetected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

This is likely because XP CD doesn't have the more modern SATA drivers for your HD.

They need to be slipstreamed into the installer, unless you have a floppy drive you can load them from during Driver Loading phase at F6 prompt.

How To Slipstream SATA Drivers Into XP CD

Have you tried installing your older programs in XP compatibility mode offered by Win7? Right click on their .exe files, select Properties, then Compatibility Tab. Run as Admin. It works about half the time, I have found. Try also the Wizard, which may want you to dial it back even further to SP1 or 2000.

I think I did the slipstream right. Everything went pretty much according to the nlite instructions, newer version but pretty easy to follow. Downloaded the intel drivers, burned the image but same error message.

Couple of questions, do I want to use both inf files from the sata driver download? Instructions said pick one and select all, which I did.

There was a caution about using all the files, something about timing. Did I need to be concerned about that or should I have slipstreamed everything from the download?

The specs for my Toshiba laptop say it has a serial ATA drive. Is this a SATA drive?

Yes, that's SATA.

Did you find SATA controller driver and slipstream it into XP?

I've got a file with several. First I tried loading them all, got the same error message results.

I then only loaded one SATA driver for a mobile device, exactly the same results. there are 3-4 different SATA mobile drivers, when I have time I'll try others as it is quite time consuming to do the whole process.

I'm not real hopeful this will work a it seems sort of hit or miss.
