You will need to partition your hard drive. If your hard drive is not partitioned, then I suggest backing up all your files, then reformat and reinstall XP. Repartitioning with an OS installed can take hours, even days on a comptuer.

From there, just install XP to one partition, then 7 to the second partition. Remember, always install the older OS first.

When you have XP installed first and then install 7 it will say "earlier version of windows" in the list instead of XP. A tutorial can be found here Dual Boot Windows 7 with XP/Vista in three easy steps - TechSpot

A tutorial for changing the name in the list can be found here Dual Boot - Change OS Name in Windows Boot Manager

With XP installed first for the existing installation you can easily shrink the main primary down a bit to see a second one created for 7. When electing the custom install option to see 7 go onto the new primary the BCD file can be edited to remove the previous entry.

For seeing XP become accessible while booted in 7 since that will then only be seen as the boot sector without a logical drive letter assigned you will need to make a trip into the 7 Disk Management tool and right click on the XP partition. That see the mount option where you can then assign D or another free drive letter since 7 will see itself as C.
