its W7 HP 64... if that matters
i do have a .iso bootable DVD of W7 HP 64 that i can use to install on new PCs but that requires a CD key to activate.

The same dvd and key you used can be used to reinstall windows but only on 1 pc.

You can reinstall a retail copy of Win7 as often as you want.

If you change hardware, it requires a robocall to MS to trade numbers which deactivate the old hardware and activate the new.

Use the DVD you made from student download ISO to reinstall. The DVD will scan the HD upon bootup, see a prior OS and pass a flag to allow Upgrade version key. You can then delete, repartition and format the HD using Custom>Drive tools if you want.

Any installer can be used as long as it is your version Win7.

    Yes.

Boot the DVD, use Custom Drive Tools to format over old installation and reinstall.

even if the CD key i bought was an "upgrade" version? i didn't think i can do fresh installs like normal with it...

As long as you have a qualifying XP or Vista on hand, you do not need to have it installed to use Upgrade version of Win7.

Read this: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

As stated, when you boot the Win7 DVD, it will see the previous install and that is enough to allow use of the Upgrade version key.
