Problem with hard disk preventing recovery or setup

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. I have tried many things but all seem to fail so I will give as much detail as possile....

I was installing Visual Studio on my Dell Mini 9 with Windows 7 when suddenly Windows hung for a long time and I was forced to power off. I turned it back on but couldn't get past the Windows 7 is Starting screen. No luck booting in safe mode either, it loads some drivers then stops after loading ClassPNP.sys (googled that one for ages).

Booted up from my Windows 7 Setup USB (don't have optical drive) and veeery slowly entered the Windows System Recovery Options. I am stuck with trying to use these options to get back up and running but think my hard drive has failed.

    1) Startup repair takes a very long time (overnight) and finally comes up with some error about bad sectors (will post exact message next time I run it)

    2) Ideally I want to restore my computer to an earlier version but NO OPERATING SYSTEMS are listed here so I cannot use this option. (Also I cannot find any drivers for my hard disk (Runcore 64GB SSD) so I cannot 'Load Drivers'

    3) I run CHKDSK from the Command Prompt. It gets to 256/350 (or so) then fails.

    4) I run diskpart to try and delete my partition and start over. This fails eventually with a cyclic redundancy check error.

    5) I try format c: but it tells me there is no such drive

Any help would be very appreciated and I am on hand to try out any suggestions.

    Thanks

Run the Diagnostics/Repair CD full scan for your HD make: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

If your make doesn't have one then try Western Digital's Lifeguard as it works for most models and has saved many HD's which were failing.

Make sure your HD is showing up in BIOS. Check cables and controller settings.

thanks very much for the reply. my hard drive manufacturer is not in that list and doesn't appear to provide such a tool. I cannot even find any drivers on their site. Runcore is a chinese company and is really the only option for an SSD upgrade on the Dell Mini 9.

Moreover, do these tools need to be run in Windows? I cannot access windows.

The Runcore SSD that I am using can be plugged in directly by USB so currently I am trying to repartition and clone an existing windows XP drive using Acronis True Image. I will post back with the results.

    Thanks again

The HD diag/repair CD is booted to scan the HD.

Try using WD Data Lifeguard as it works on most makes. I am uploading the file here so you can install it then burn CD with image which will extract to root drive.

The best tool for Win7 partitioning also has a surface scan and file check built in. Use the bootable CD version: Free Download Partition Wizard

    Runcore SSD unbootable

    Hello,

I recently purchased 128 GB runcore SSD PATA ZIF for my Sony Vio P series. I cloned the old HDD using Acronis true image with USB connection. After cloning, everything seems to be fine and it gets cloned succesfully and when I explore the SSD all files are there.

But when I remove the old HDD and install the new SSD it doesn't boot. The error message states windows failed due to new hardware or software, then you get two options repair or start windows normaly and non of these options work. Another error that appears after that states that disk inaccessible. I reformated and recloned a number of times but still the same problem.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanx

Do you give the new a drive a letter?
If yes, remove drive letter & reclone.

You may need to repair the SYstem MBR on the cloned HD. Did you have Acronis copy the MBR?

Make sure target HD has Win7 partition marked active, Unplug other HD, boot Win7 DVD REpair console or Repair CD, click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots.

What do you mean you cloned via USB. Can you plug both HD's using SATA or IDE cables?

    Runcore SSD

    Hi,
    Thanks for the replies.

When I connect the SSD using the enclosure that come with it, the system assignes "I" to it automatically since "C" is assigned to the main drive, and "D" is assigned to the system reserve. But when I remove the old drive which is C and attach the SSD then I assume it becomes C but there is no way I check that because the windows doesn't boot. I only get the windows starting message and logo briefly and then a black windows comes on stating that windows failed due to new hardware or software modification. And there are two options: repair windows and second option is to start windows normaly but non of these two options work. According to manufacturer it suppose to be plug and play by attaching it through usb, clone and then remove the old rotary drive and replace it with SSD. I contacted them but they insist that it should work and suggest that I reformat and recolone. The videos I watched online claim that it works. Any ideas?

I didn't find any specific options for MBR in acronis, I assume complete cloning would copy everything. How do I have the system repair the MBR?

The SSD is placed in an enclosure that has usb connections and connect it to the computer which seems to be working fine and I have full access to the SSD and the files copied or cloned to it. I even tried to run the windows from SSD while having the rotary drive untouched by changing the booting setup in the bios by allowing the system to start from external drive instead of internal drive, I can see SSD light flashing which means the PC is accessing the SSD but I get the same error.
