Dual boot - now Grub is trashed

I am stuck.

Fresh install of everything:
* 10mb partition in the front for Grub to live
* Allowed Win7 (enterprise, 64bit) to make its 100mb partition next
* Win7 "C" drive next (175gb)
* Ubuntu (ext3) partition next (~75gb)


Everything was going ok - both Win7 & Ubuntu were co-existing nicely. Ran Symantec Ghost and made an image of the whole disk. Even copied the image back to the computer - and it worked great.

Began installing apps into Win7 - in particular, Visual Studio 2008. Ran Windows Update, installed ok - but wanted to restart. Restarted.

Now in infinite loop where it flashes "grub" on the screen and goes right back to the Bios screen and boots again.


Searched this forum - tried to run a win7 Startup Repair as recommended. Nadda.


Tried to copy the disk image back to the computer and start over w/ installing apps.
STILL NADDA


Now I'm stuck. Advice?

Yeah - that's the site I used to do the make the dual boot machine to start with.

GRUB is a wild card here which makes normal Win7 recovery difficult. Even if you can recover Win7, it will write out the GRUB until you deep clean and reinstall both OS's according to the tutorial, from what we have seen here.

Normal repair method would be to boot DVD Repair console or Repair CD, click through to Recovery Tools list to System Restore before Updates were installed, or earlier if necc.

If this fails, make sure Win7 is marked Active, choose Startup Repair from Recov Tools list to run up to 3 separate times with reboots to recover the MBR into Win7. This will likely cut GRUB/Ubuntu out if it works.
