Dual-boot -> The 'other' OS is missing from boot screen

    Hi.

Sorry for having a bad title. It's midnight.

Well anyways, i've got a little situation. I'll try to put this as short as possible ( hopefully ).

    - Just spent 15 minutes typing text below and decided to re-type as it's getting way too long -

So........ I've always been on Dual boot for a million years. Had XP and Win7. Whenever i turn on my PC, i'll have the option to load whichever OS i'd like.

Just got rid of XP and installed Win7. Totally mess it up. So i went back to XP. Right now when i turn on my PC, it goes straight to Win7 and doesn't give me the option to either boot XP or Win7.

How do i fix this? I want to have the old option back in boot screen ( if that's what it's called ).

If you need more info, i'll be glad to provide.

    Cheers.

You need to use a program like bcdedit to edit the boot loader. use these instructions and let us know if you need help. BCDEDIT - How to Use

This is confusing. If you deleted XP and installed Win7, then went back to XP, why would it boot to Win7?

I guess you meant to say you have still have XP and Windows 7 on separate partitions, but changes you made have cut XP out of the Boot Menu?

The solution to this is to download and install EasyBCD 2.0 beta to Win7 (after doing the quick forum registration to use beta) to Add XP back to Dual boot menu. It will offer boot fiiles which should be accepted and then autocomplete the Add. Restart to Dual Boot menu.

If this fails, then we need to see a screenshot of your full Disk Management drive map - use Snipping Tool in Start Menu, attach file using Paper Clip in Reply Box - to help you sort out the problems.

Sorry, i tried to make it as short as possible.

    1. I have 2 partition. XP and Windows 7 (ultimate).
    2. Decided to remove XP and replace that with another Windows 7 (professional).
    3. When i did that, my PC automatically boot to Windows 7 Pro instead of giving me the option.
    4. Because of that, i remove Windows 7 Pro and went back to XP.
    5. After which, my PC boots to XP without giving me an option to load Windows 7 Ultimate as well.
    6. Got my Windows 7 DVD and did the "bootrec /fixmbr - bootrec /Fixboot".
    7. Now, my PC load straight to Windows 7 Ultimate and doesn't show XP.

I have EasyBCD but don't really know how to actually get it back.

    Update :

Okay, this would be a whole lot easier if i had installed EasyBCD Beta first. I didn't know there was the beta ( thanks for the tip Greg )

I just did that and went to "Add New Entry" and it automatically finds the XP bootloader instead of manually doing it ( on 1.7.2 ). All the technical mambo-jumbo is too much for me.

Thanks yet again. sevenforums saved my behind once more. :)

Moderators : Please mark this as solved.

Added Rep to you both for the assistance.

Hopefully Dual Boot tutorial can be updated to use EasyBCD 2.0, perhaps when it gets out of beta.

Thanks for posting back to help others.
