Win 7 installation on Vista computer won't work - Help!

Yesterday I installed Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit on a clean second HDD on my computer with FlamingBlade mobo, i7 920, 6 Gb DDR3 memory, and Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit running on the old HDD.

The installation was completed uneventfully, there was a restart, the system asked whether to start Win 7 or Win Vista, I did nothing, Win 7 loaded OK, and I did some chores, and then switched the computer off.

On power up, the sequence was repeated but after Win 7 was chosen without my intervention, the system did not load, there was a blank (black) screen, and nothing beyond that.

I switched the box off with the power button, powered up again, and when Win 7 was chosen automatically, the system “recommended” that I do a “system repair” because Win 7 had not previously shut down correctly.

I chose to run the repair... and then the system went dead again, blank screen, did nothing etc.

When I choose Vista, the system boots normally and all’s well.

Any ideas on how to convince the Win 7 installation to work will be greatly appreciated.

Here’s a snipping tool capture of my disk info. Win 7 resides in new partition E.

Many thanks.

Welcome!

That's not a problem at all. First, set the Windows 7 disk to be the first in the boot priority in your BIOS.

Then boot to your Wndows 7 DVD, and run a startup repair.

That should do the trick!

Many thanks for your quick reply. I will try the fix later (it's time for my rounds right now) and I will post the results. Thanks again.

In fact, I just changed the boot priority and the whole thing works without a startup repair. Thanks again.

Great. What was happening was that the computer was trying to boot from the other drive, which didn't have a boot loader on it.

Thanks for reporting back. Let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks, Jonathan! I will surely know where to come when (not "if") I have more Win 7 problems (a born "optimist" here...!)
