    Deleting old xp volume

    Hi,

i recently switched from XP to Windows 7, which I installed on disk 1 while xp and debian were on disk 0. Since I want to move completly to Win 7 I want to clean out disk 0 completly. Deleting the Linux partition was no proplem but I don't seem to be able to delete the xp partition. The Disk Manager just won't let me do it. The Xp partition is flagged as System, Active, Primary Partition, the Win 7 partition is flagged as Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition. I have restored the MBR to disk 1 already so that shouldn't be the problem.

Hope you can help me, I really have no idea what to try now ...

Boot from your xp or win7 disk, then format the disk 0. After that repartition as per choice.

    Welcome!

Try cleaning the disk completely using Diskpart.

Boot from your Windows DVD, and press Shift+10 at the language selection screen, to pull up a command prompt.

    Then enter the following:

    diskpart

    list disk

    select disk [
the number of the hard drive you want to clean]

    clean

You can now start setup again.

Good luck, and let us know if you need help.

I tried the diskpart with clean all command but it said that system and boot partitions could not be cleaned. I tried deleting the partition with the boot dvd but after that it says the mbr is missing. Repairing via the boot dvd just brings be back to the beginning ...

Tell you what, just install right on top of the XP partition. That will backup your data to windows.old, and you can just delete it when you are done.

    morbid,

What i had suggested was that you format the disk 0 from the boot dvd, not delete the partition.

    1) You need to copy your Boot files from Disk0 to Disk1.
    2) Than remove XP Disk0 & replace with Win 7 Disk1.
    3) Than do a Startup Repair 3 to 4 times.

    Startup Repair

You'll need to mark Win7 active first in order to recover MBR onto it by running Startup Repair up to 3 separate times from the booted WIn7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD.

You can do as theog suggests and remove the XP HD to replace it with Win7 HD as Disk0, or you can keep XP HD in place, make sure Win7 HD is set to boot first (after DVD) in BIOS Setup, boot the Win7 DVD, press Shift F10 at bootup, open a Command Line to type:

    DISKPART
    LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (confirm by size this is XP HD)
    INACTIVE
    DELETE PARTITION OVERRIDE
    CLEAN ALL
SELECT DISK 1 (confirm by size this is Win7 HD)
    ACTIVE
    EXIT

Now return to Reccovery tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots as DVD will write MBR to Win7.
