I bought a computer a few years ago when I was a student. I bought it 2nd hand from some guy who had only used it a couple of months. He put it together himself so theres no brand or anything. However, I'm pretty sure it runs a pirated copy of windows xp on it, as he specifically told me to keep auto updates off.
Yeah i didnt really care, because I only used it to do assignments and pretty much nothing more. For the internet there was always the campus computers which saved money on utilities .
Anyway, as I'm no longer a student and no longer in the dire need for cash I've decided to upgrade the computer and I was thinking windows 7.
The hardware is not all that bad. It has a AMD sempron, socket AM2, so if I really need to processor updates are available on ebay. The RAM has only 2 slots and right now in one of them is a 1024mb Aeneon. So I was thinking of putting a 2gb DDR2 in the other slot.
My question is, will I be able to put a fresh copy of Windows 7 on it, as it runs possibly a pirated copy of windows xp?
Second question, I dont know if I can use the microsoft update advisor, to see if the hardware is ok enough for windows 7. Can I? or would there be problems with the XP its running?
I would like to install windows 7 ultimate, because it says that its the easiest to switch between different languages. I've also read that windows 7 can switch to xp mode but for that you'd need about 3gb of RAM. Is that true?
I would like to update the hardware of the com and not throw it away and buy a new one because, it still works fine. I've never had it hanging or anything like that.
XP Mode only requires 2GB but it'll run better with upwards of 4GB.
You're better off upgrading almost your entire machine if you want to upgrade hardware.
You can get a new motherboard and CPU for pretty cheap if you go with the 2nd generation products (AMD Phenom X4 9xxx Series). You'll have to purchase new ram as well, but it'll be well worth it.
You should be able to upgrade your computer with a legitimate version of Ultimate.
Thanks for your reply. I am planning on upgrading it to a legitimate version of windows 7. Its good to know that it would work without a problem I was hoping I wouldnt have to completely upgrade my computer. I find it a waste to throw away something that works perfectly fine :)
But I'll check the cost of the Phenom motherboards you recommended. Thank you.
Hey again!
I just checked the prices of Phenom processors as well as motherboards. Thats insanely expensive over here. Its about 400 + euros for a whole new computer with a Phenom x4 processor. Well just the processor alone on ebay goes off for more than 140euros. I didnt wait to see the end price. Perhaps its cheaper for me to stick with upgrading the RAM and the processor if necessary. I guess I'll just upgrade the RAM to at least 2gb ddr2 first and then try the windows 7 ultimate on it.
Uhm, so that means I cant use the microsoft update advisor right on my system right?

Sorry I'm just a lil confused about your posts. But if you're looking for mobo info, I can give that to you as I found the manual it came with.
The motherboard is a GeForce 6100SM-M and supports AMD socket AM2 processors like Athlon 64, Athlon FX, X2 dual core and sempron processors. Although mine has the last one. A sempron processor, I think its 3200+ and the computer records the speed at 1.8ghz.
The are only 2 slots for RAM expansion and according to the manual each supports up to 8gbs of DDR2 RAM with a max of DDR2 800. It runs only non ECC ram. Right now it has an Aeneon 1024mb DDR2 533 in one of its slots.
The graphics card I'm currently using is the built in one. So is the sound card. There are 2 PCI slots and 1 PCI 2 x16 graphics card slot.
I have 2 hard disks. Both 80gbs 7200rpm SATA.
If you need more information than that, I'll be happy to give it to you.
