Need an install disc for win 7 64 Pro

    Hi All,

I just got a new HP mobile workstation and it came with only Win 7- 32 bit discs. I need a 64 bit OS. I found an ISO file on the net and downloaded it. How do I make a bootable DVD from another system, say one of my XP systems, so that I can start installing Win7Pro 64 bit and all the other stuff that I need? I am trying to avoid waiting for the HP disc to show up which will be who knows how long.
    Thanks,

if you found an iso burn it to a dvd and try it. you might find out that your key won't work with that disc image though.

Sorry, can't really help you with illegal downloads. I suggest you go out and buy a 64-bit disk.

nothing illegal here. I have a key from HP and they are sending my the software and I am entitled to it. Thought that was pretty clear in my original post. I am just trying to get the thing rebuilt the way I want and I would rather do it sooner rather than later.

Anyway, I figured out the bootable DVD thing. You need to use some special tool I got from the Microsoft site to burn the ISO file onto the DVD. It checks and validates, the computer that requested it, not that it has much to do with the target install machine and hopefully that doesn't cause me any issues re the previous post.

Now a more technical question since I don't install OS's too often. HP has put two partitions on the drive, one with their tools(2GB) and a big empty one (300GB). The HP thing at 2 GB is not of much concern. What I need is a a 100 GB C: partition for programs et al & a 200 GB partition for my data. So my question now is: do I have to 1) delete the existing partitions, 2) reformat the drive and 3 set up new partitions the way I want? Assuming that is about right should I set up another partition for the HP tools as well?

If you don't need/want the HP tools then go ahead and remove the partition (I would) I would remove all partitions and set new ones as needed.

If you wish to have full COOPERATIVE access to your HP warranty service, Do Not delete the HP partition. Otherwise, I agree with Tw33k.

    Thanks guys,

We can close this off. I called up HP and they suggested as you did to delete them all and set it up however I want. so I did. I will add that it can get sort of unobvious onto which partition you you are actually installing the OS on. I am redoing it now as it went onto one I did not intend. C'est la vie. Still not sure I got it right on the second attempt.......
    Thanks for all your help.

PS one of the other posters said my key might not work - as long as you have a Win 7 key on the certificate (on the back of the machine) you are good to go - according to the HP guy anyway and it worked..
    Ciao,

You may have to do the activation robocall to sort out your individual key form the batch key normally given on the COA sticker. But all Win7 installers are the same, either 32 or 64 bit with some versions often hidden due to the presence of ei.cfg file in Sources folder, so it should activate.
