Dual Boot Issue

So I am dual booting XP and 7 at this point. However, I have no need for the XP OS now, and want to delete that partition.

I've tried doing it via the command prompt way. When I type delete volume it says:
"Virtual Disk Service error:
The device is in use."

but when I type in delete volume override it tells me:
"Virtual Disk Service error:
Delete is not allowed on the current boot, system, pagefile, crashdump or hibernation volume."

Is there a way to go about fixing this without wiping my entire drive and starting from scratch? Thanks!

1) Download SIW2 Tool sispar to your desktop, from here.

2) Unzip download.
You can download 7zip from here,

3) Open folder, Right Click and run as admin on sispar.cmd.

4) Press enter

5) Enter the drive letter you want for the NEW system partition (must be a Primary partition with 7 on it)

6) If you want to include all your current boot menu items (assuming you have more than one) type Y when it asks, if you only want the boot menu entry for the New system partition, type N.

If the NEW system partition is on the first HD in boot order - it will show as "system" in Disk management on next restart. If you have more than one HD - obviously, on restart go into bios and set the HD containing the NEW system partition first in bios boot order.[Quote]

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately I started getting a missing NTLDR message soon afterwards and had to reformat my system... which allowed me to fix the partition issue, albeit in a more extreme manner than I would have liked.

Sorry you had the bad experience. I'm going to let SIW2 give out his Sispar automated batch file in the future as it failed when I tried to help someone using it, too.

The tried and true procedure (learned from SIW2) which has helped remove hundreds of dual boots here remains: Mark Win7 partition active, boot the WIn7 DVD REpair console or Repair CD, click through to Recovery tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots to write the MBR to Win7.

Now you can delete the XP partition, even recover its disk space into Win7 using free Partition Wizard bootable CD, which can also be used to mark your WIn7 active and delete XP.
