    Windows 7 upgrade (vista) from boot


    Is there any way to do a upgrade from vist to W7 from boot, as I cannot access vista, got damaged beyond repair.

    You will be much better off erasing all and doing a clean install.

    You can however, choose the Upgrade path from boot.. Yes.

    It says to start vista up and run it from there. Have tried running it from UBCD (Mem stick) but it says the OS running is not compatible.

    No way to Upgrade install Win7 from Vista if it won't start.

    Have you booted the Vista DVD Repair console or Repair CD to attempt a repair? If so, boot again and click through to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair repeatedly.

    Then: Clean Install Windows 7

    Hi Olirav,

    Since your Vista is damaged beyond repair, I suggest just going ahead with a clean installation of a full retail version of Windows 7. This way you will be giving your computer a fresh, new start :)

    Can't do fresh install, as have too much stuff and nowhere to back it up to.
    But have thought up a easy way of doing it, resize & create new partition for w7 and then move stuff accross graduallt resizing all the time.

    That will work but you still will need to re-install the apps. The data will be safe though.

    I apologize for the mis-information. I was thinking it would allow Upgrade if booting from disc without actually booting into Vista.

    A better way is to create a data partition on the right side of HD to move your data and installers into from OS partition.

    Then when you are sure you have it copied over, boot the installer and format the old OS partition to install there.

    As long as you make sure you do not touch the new data partition, then the data will be waiting for you there once you get the new OS installed in the other partition.

    Do this only if you are absolutely unable to buy or borrow an external HD, though. It would even be better to back up the data to DVD.

    sorry havent been able to use a coputer for a while.
    Am having slight proalems creating a new partition, as it seems the hd was not emtirely fixed, and that slight error causes whatever boot disb is used to crash.
    At the moment am waiting for a enclosure to arrive now.
    Will post again whdn have any real developments/setbacks.
