Please help upgrading my xp to windows 7

Hi guys this is my very first post here and i cam accross this wonderful site by googling my question. Seems like a great site with alot of information and I'm hoping i can find some help here.

I have a 4year old dell demension E310 running windows xp. I'm wanting to upgrade to windows 7. The current memory is 512mb, but i have ordered 2 sticks of 1gb memory each for the upgrade so i should have 2gb of memory for windows 7.

is there anything else that might bring me any problems when doing the upgrade??

once again thanks for the help it's greatly appreciated!

I've heard of it not being to accurate. I read from some posters that the upgrade advisor was telling them some things wouldn't work yet they were sure they would and installed no problem. Do you know anything about this?

I have 2 sources of information; my own experience and information from posters.

Neither have indicated any problem of that nature.

No matter what it will have to be a fresh install, so you may have problems with the activation key. If you shrink XP or delete it while doing a custom install from XP you should be okay. Also W7 will save the XP in a old windows file for you. Just make sure you know what your doing, to get this benefit. I'm sure there are people on the forum who can give better advice though.

There is no harm in running the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, it is really there to help you with the upgrade and foresee any issues you may come across. It is your choice if you listen to it or not.

Additionally, here is a guide that will help you step-by-step with the upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. You will need to do a custom installation, so make sure your files, programs, and settings are backed up to an external hard drive before moving forward :) Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7 - Help & How-to - Microsoft Windows

    Hope this helps!

OK guys I have ran the upgrade adviser and of coursgre I needed more memory, but it also said my graphics adapter doesn't support Aero. Once again I have a dell e310. Do I need Aero to run Windows7? Is it a big draw back to not have Aero? Also can you guys direct me where i can find a graphics card that does support Aero for my pc?

Aero is window dressing, dont worry about it. Its not even available in all editions

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...ures/aero.aspx

Finally this is how it is disabled if you want improved performance.

But wait for others to come by, since this is a subjective area.
