Windows 7: Win 7 Problems

Win 7 Problems

Hey Guys, I thought I was finally safe but I guess not.

I was prompted to activate Win 7, and it gave me this error:

Code: 0xC004F061

The Software Licensing Service determined that this specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not clean installations.

I thought it didn't matter if I did a format or if I clicked upgrade when I was doing the install? I formatted because my old installation was virussed.

Any ideas?

Yes you can do a full cleran install with a Win7 upgrade disk but you must follow these steps in the tutorial.

Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

Main Point
Do a custom install at boot or from within your current Windows installation without checking the Automatically activate Windows when I'm online box during the installation process.

I think you may need to reformat the hard drive before you install because Win7 will know you tried to install once.

Hmm looks like I got screwed. The installation disk I have is for professional and it seems that the only thing I can upgrade to from professional is ultimate? How does that make sense at all?

Also: I did not check the automatically activate Windows when I'm online.

Automatically activate has no significance in this situation.

Right or wrong that is the upgrade policy of MS. Sorry that you are having this problem.

Well it's especially annoying because the only reason I had to clean install was cause of that virus. I actually upgraded, but that HD died, so I RMA'd, and they sent me a new one. What was I supposed to do? Are there any solutions?

As stated, you can indeed Custom clean install the Upgrade version by using one of the workarounds in the link Iggy posted.

Perhaps easiest is to Custom install and leave key blank, then run an Upgrade over itself which will trick the installer into accepting Upgrade version key.

Whatever version of Vista you originally upgraded from is irrelevant here.

Any questions?

Well the chart in that link for the upgrade said that professional can only upgrade to ultimate, that's why I was confused. But if I can upgrade on top of it, then it shouldn't be a problem at all since all my files would be intact, yes?

Correct. You are using the same version/installer to do the Upgrade over itself, right?
