Win7 not handling external LCD correctly

I have a laptop with an external 22" wide screen LCD monitor. This setup ran fine with XP and Vista, but is not working correctly under Win7 RC1.

    1) The monitor is running at 1680x1050 resolution and Win7 knows this (verified by the display settings).

    2) However, the monitor is displaying a SQUARE'ish image ... more like about 1200x1050 ... with BLACK BANDS on the left and right sides of the monitor.

    3) If I maximize a window on that monitor, the left and right sides of the window "disappear" into the black bands. So it TRULY IS running 1680x1050 but only showing about 1200x1050 worth of the image.

I noticed too that Win7 is calling this monitor an analog monitor. Maybe that is correct, I don't know. I always thought it was digital. It's connected to the VGA port on my laptop.

Any ideas on what to do? Do I need a monitor driver?

    NEVER MIND! :)

I totally thought this was a driver issue of some sort because the monitor went screwy as part of the upgrade to Win7 and it had never been like this before.

After doing everything to get drivers up to date and fiddling with settings and not having any success ... I plugged the monitor into another laptop where it used to work just find and the SAME THING HAPPENED on that computer! AHA! Problem was the monitor.

    Fixed. NEVER MIND! :)
