Upgrade From Vista SP1 64bit Home Premium To RC

I downloaded the 64bit release candidate yesterday and tried the upgrade from Vista Home Premium SP1 64bit. Everything checked out fine and the upgrade started... when the last stage is around 66% complete I get the message:

Werfault.exe application error, the instruction at 0x76B93892 reference memory at 0x00000000, the memory could not be read.

The installation program rolled back, which was very nice! I made a few changes and tried it another couple of times with the same result.

My system has an Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard, AMD 9850 X4 cpu, 4GB memory, EVGA GTX 295, two Maxtor hard drives - 300GB and 500GB, 2 DVD drives, etc.

Anyone have any suggestions other than a clean install? I had tried the Win 7 beta version with a clean install and that had installed but that was all I did with it.

hu, seems your dvd has file errors? ( IE corrupted)
the other thing would be your ram ( faulty ram causes these kind of errors )

This is exactly the same as my error and I installed the upgrade from my downloaded file, not a dvd drive.
I have an asus s6fm laptop, coincidence that they're both Asus?
It installed right up to the last minute like yours, and I was gutted. I have a 2 and 512 ram sticks.
Read somewhere that the ram could be too fast or is that rubbish? Am stuck now!!!!!

I ran Memtest on my memory and it checked out fine and I even disabled the overclocking of my AMD 9850 . I gave the upgrade another try with the same result.

As I have several drives in my case, I unplugged all the hard drives and plugged one that I was not using. I then started a clean install and I was greeted with the Windows 7 logon when I return from a shower.

So I assume that the DVD I created is fine and everything else is fine too, but that this Windows 7 has a problem upgrading my current Vista Home Premium 64bit system. Guess if I want to run Windows 7 with my current applications I will need to do a clean install and then install all the applications one by one. There goes my weekend.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

It's a shame you couldn't upgrade. An idea would be to send feedback to Microsoft and give the exact details via e-mail or their forum. This is the sort of information that they are looking for people to give when upgrading. At least this way the RTM shouldn't have the same issue.
