    Please help with installing 7

    Hi all

I have a Vista x86 installed on an old IDE drive. A few days ago I bought a new SATA drive and wanted to install windows 7 x64 on it. I selected the SATA drive to boot first in the BIOS and booted the installation DVD. I got as far as the first restart (after the files are copied). If I don't select to boot from the DVD the PC is rebooted back immidiately. If I take out the DVD I get a "disk read error. Press ctrl-alt-del" message. The drive is brand new but i ran chkdsk just in case and it came out clean. For now I'm using the old vista from my IDE drive. What should I do?

Hi ALH did you let it do its thing? Its possible that the copy didn't work properly the first time, so maybe you should try running it again? If you have a little bit of space, you can try making a recovery partition from your disk. Recovery Partition - Create that will speed up the process considerably its possible that there was a disk read error.

Also don't take the DVD out until installation is complete! during that second boot it copies drivers over

Did you remove the IDE HD before installing WIN7?
Can you boot Vista,& set the new drive up?

Can you post a screen shot Disk management?

    Hi severedsolo

I thought about it. I actually installed it twice (the first installation was saved in windows.old). Both times I let it run to the end. Nothing changed.

Also I didn't take out the disk during the installation but only after the restart. If I let it stay in the drive then as soon as the "boot from disk...." passed the PC reset immediately. No messages, nothing. I copied the contents of the DVD to the hard drive and it went fine. I also used the same DVD earlier to install windows 7 on my father's PC. It worked fine.

I didn't remove the IDE HD during the installation, just changed the boot order in the BIOS. I did set the new drive up in Vista before and even split it into NTFS partitions in Vista.

Try removing IDE HD,& reformat new HD.

When you formated the new Hd, did you do a quick format or a full format?

OK I'll try it later on. I only need to format the system partition on the new HD right? The one where I tried installing the Windows.

I didn't specifically format the drive before. Just created the NTFS Partitions on it.

Yes, you can run full format on partition 2 when Win7 is installed.

It is best to run a full format on all new HD's.

I have a SATA configuration menu that has a SATA type option. The choices are SATA,RAID,AHCI, and right now it's on AHCI. Is that what you're talking about?

If it helps my MB is ASUS M3A78-EMH
