    Home Premium to Ultimate

I want to upgrade from 32-bit Windows 7 Home Premium to 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate. Can this be done with an in-place install, or does it require a clean install?

    Thanks.

To add to what Zidane told you, an in-place upgrade is never possible from a 32-bit Windows to 64-bit, or from 64-bit to 32-bit.

Home Premium 32-bit can only be in-place upgraded to Ultimate 32-bit.

    Clean Install Windows 7

When you boot the installer to Custom Install, it will scan the HD to see prior OS, passing a flag to allow use of Upgrade version key - even if you then go on to use Custom>Drive Options to Delete, Repartition and Format for cleanest install.

boot windows 1st then choose the custom install option.. but don't activate windows right away.. the idea is to keep the windows.old file just in case there are some files you forgot to back up. After you're sure you've got everything and it's all working, then reinstall, booting from the windows DVD, and set up your hdd so there's a relatively small partition for the OS and games (20% of your total hdd space but not more than 100 GB or less than 40Gb) and a 2nd partition for media, personal files and a backup image if you choose to make one. Your system will run much faster if you keep media and documents separate from system and program files and you won't need to move or back up personal stuff again if you ever have to reinstall windows
