Window 7 installation does not detect my Hard disk

Hi, I have a 2.8 Ghz, P4 processor with 768 (512 + 256) MB ram and an Asus p5rd1-vm motherboard with a 128 MB ATI-Radeon Graphics Card. I have been running Windows XP for years. I have decided to upgrade to Windows 7 finally after reading all the reviews. However, During installation, my hard disk is not being detected (There is no drive on screen which I can format or set up on.) Can anyone help? Do I need to update my BIOS? Will it solve my problem? Also, I recently changed my hard disk (upgraded it) and XP has been installed and is running fine. Could it be a hardware problem? Could my hard disk not be compatible with 7, Is that a possibility? HELP!!

Thanks..I installed an IDE-SATA convertor, it now detects my hard disk, but once windows 7 is installed and the computer is restarted, I get "Unkown Error" on screen. Any idea why? I have read reviews online where systems with lower configs have easily installed 7. Is it because my mother board is not compatible? It is an Asus pvrd1-vm motherboard. I have not updated my BIOS because I have no idea how to do so
