Windows 7: RC1 64bit Not Responding

27 May 2009   #51

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP-1

An IRQ conflict does seem like it could be causing this problem -- I haven't had to deal with IRQ conflict for about 15 years though I wonder why Win7 would be any having IRQ issues while Vista did not.

How did you determine there was an IRQ conflict with your sound drivers?

Windows 7 RC build 7100

Was not a conflict but the drivers software were not servicing the IRQ's properly that the board was sending out. Therefore the audio board would send out a new set IRQ's repeatedly because it was not getting the response it wanted, and the system would 'hang' while trying to service all the IRQ's that were being generated. Same thing for my external drive when I turn it on, for some reason takes about a couple minutes for all the IRQ's to settle down and the drive to be recognized properly. But alas this drive did the same thing when I run Windows XP 64.

Windows 7, hopefully

I've now run into multiple people who have the same problem. All of which have a Core i7 920 on an x58 chipset. This is the common thread from what I can tell. No clear solution for fixing it yet. Could be CPU or chipset.

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP-1

I spent so much time doing research, trying different settings, installing BIOS's, drivers, uninstalling programs, monitoring logs, monitoring processes, removing startup programs, etc. It was a really frustrating experience.

I eventually gave up and, last Friday, installed Vista x64 and all my software there. After four days, everything is running fantastically and there are zero "Not Responding" issues. I don't think I'm going to spend any more time on Windows 7 until the final release No guarantee that this particular problem will be fixed so I might be on Vista for a while...

Unfortunately, I don't seem to have dual boot even though I installed Vista onto another drive -- I think there's utilities that I can run to enable that though.

Dual boot XP Pro and Seven/7127

brian5, your findings are most interesting to me
Like you I have been forced to give up on Win7 coz of apps Not Responding. The situation is unworkable.
I had dual boot with XP Pro and Win7. I never touched vista.
I have had to remove/delete the win7 partition and carry on as I have been for years with XP.
However, unlike you I am now getting Not Responding issues with my XP programs. Esp those that run as small batch such as adding Album Art to mp3 tags. The process hangs, or it takes 2 or 3 mins to do what it used to do in a matter of seconds.
I am not in a postilion to do a complete re-install of XP Pro and all my work programs.
I am not a happy bunny.

Yes, I have seen posts on other forums for this combo too.

FYI. I have tried AMI BIOS 1.5 and 3.4 (SLI). Also tried the "supported" Intel Chipset (as supplied by Win7 update) and the latest one from Intel (which is labeled a "beta") too.
