Possibly a jumper misconfiguration? Does bios list the new hard drive properly?
I'd say connect your system the way you plan to always have it (both drives?), make sure all is good in bios, then install windows 7. When booted into Windows 7, you could easily add the XP drive to the boot menu using EasyBCD.

still not working
I tried Master and cable select on the hdd,NO LUCK. Gets all the way to completing installation and reboots constantly. I now have 5 choices of win 7 on the splash screen to choose from. My hdd is recognized in BIOS both as MASTER and CABLE SELECT.What else can I try? I reformatted each time I tried to install win 7.to no avail. I think it's something simple but I can't figure it out. Thanks for the help. I'm not giving up.
