Question on updating from home premium to pro

Hey just wanna know if I did a clean install of pro full version, when right now I have home premium, would this create a windows.old folder like when doing a clean install of the home premium upgrade version??
Need to make the switch to pro for an online IT course I'm gonna do

    Thanks :)

Yes as long as you don't format the partition first. You should run the installer from the OS to maker sure.

But you can't depend on windows.old in place of backing up your files. You need to do that first.

THere is a workaround which will allow you to in-place upgrade between Win7 versions if you want it.

Thanks for that reply. By using the installer from the OS you mean from the 7 pro disc right?? (just making sure I understood that haha)
    What is the work around??
    Thanks again for replying

You can try doing an Anytime Upgrade, Start>Control Panel> System>Get more features with a new edition of Windows 7>Enter an upgrade key (this would be on the upgrade disk sleeve). It is not always 100% successful but I have done 4 so far w/o issue and it leaves everything you have in place and takes 6-10 minutes to run.

Anytime Upgrade will save money if you dont'' already have the Pro retail version.

If so, try inserting the key into Anytime Upgrade as fishnbanjo suggests.

If not, you can do an in-place Upgrade between versions using the popular workaround used by many beta users to change from the Ultimate RC to any paid version.

You change the two registry keys below exactly as shown to fool the installer into thinking it is doing a same-version Repair Install which is always allowed:

Then run a Repair Install with your Professional DVD from the desktop. Be sure to back up your files and a system image any time you do an install.

Thanks for the replies. Damn the anytime upgrade thing sounds simple but the full version was on sail almost half price where I ordered it from no idea why the upgrade was still the same.
What exactly is a system image? Oh and can 1 disc install on more than one pc???

You can still do the upgrade workaround using a full retail version - just click Upgrade instead of Custom. Or clean install using this: Clean Install Windows 7

You can use each Product Key on only one machine at a time.

With Win7 built-in backup imaging, reinstalls are a thing of the past: Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup

For more flexibility on selecting which partition(s) to image and where to reimage them use Macrium Reflect Free - Reviews and free Macrium Reflect Free downloads at Download.com
