    How to disable mcupdate.exe?

I don't use Media Center but last week I opened it up to take a look around. Now that I have done this I get mcupdate.exe running occasionally and a Media Center icon in the notification area when this happens. It's obviously downloading something. What is this process doing and whats the best way to disable it? Is there a setting in Media Center that I can disable or is it a service? I could just go and disable Media Center from the Control Panel but I would like to know more about whats going on first.

Click on Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Windows update > Change Settings (left corner) > under important updates > select Never check for updates (not recommended) from the drop down menu > click on ok.
If the above steps don’t help, then I would suggest you to temporarily disable McAffee and check whether it helps. To do so, please follow the steps below:
    a) In the system tray, right-click the McAfee Virus Scan icon
    b) Select Exit.
1.Depending on your version of McAfee Virus Scan, the menu option may appear as Disable. McAfee Virus Scan will stay disabled until you restart your computer.
2.To re-enable McAfee Virus Scan, restart your computer.
    c) To re-enable McAfee Virus Scan, restart your computer.

mcupdate.exe is not McAfee (at least on my machine it isn't). I don't have McAfee and never have. mcupdate.exe is a Media Center process and the icon that appears in the notification area is clearly a Media Center icon.

My Windows updates are set to notify me but not download so thats not it.

When I opened Media Center for the first time I'm sure that some setting was set that has it updating Media Center data.

As I said in my first post I know I could just disable Media Center if I wanted to but I want to know more about what happened with the mcupdate.exe process. What exactly is updating and what setting in Media Center is responsible for the process?

Do you get mcupdate.exe running on your machine occasionally?

Hmm there is no one here that has seen this process and knows what it does and what setting will disable it?

From my search try going to Control Panel > Administration Tools > Task Scheduler Expand Windows then find Media Center then..look in the list for mcupdate, right-click > disable.. then restart.

OK thanks will give that a try.

Does Media Center set this automatically just from opening it for the first time?
