WMP 12 library builds slowly - embedded cover tags causing slow-down

Hi,

I have a (in my opinion) well sorted MP3 library. I've embedded the album cover in the tags.

WMP12 reads the appropriate files, but needs about 3-4 Sec. each file. I've placed "folder.jpg" in the same folder. WMP Internet settings are disabled.

After removing the album tag, WMP reads the files pretty fast into the library of WMP 12.

Can anyone explain to me, if this is a bug or how to avoid the slow library build up without removing all the album cover tags (I use them for my standalone Laptop using MediaMonkey, but I don't know how to use MediaMonkey wihtin Windows Media Center on my HTPC).

Thanks and kind regards,
Joe

You say you have embedded album art into tags, so why do you need additional pics in each folder? Those album art "tags" are built as protected system files as well as hidden when you embed them into files. WMP should load the album art even without the jpg files you placed inside folders IF each file has the album art tag.

Hello Gornot,

Thanks for your reply...

I've implemented an album art file as jpg in my folders, as I began searching for them manually years ago and than tagged them later into the files. MediaMonkey also asks me to keep a local file and I can choose, which to use as album tag. Personally, I like this behaviour to keep a single file stored separately.

In the first version of MediaPlayer on Vista 64 Bit (during my build of the HTPC), I did not stop adding art files by WMP (as I did not really know the behaviour of WMP as I was working with Windows Media Center as I added those to my library). I noticed this later, but did keep the files (AlbumArt*jpg and the hidden folder.jpg).

What's now going to be interesting is the addtional experience I have since yesterday: the old machine of my son was upgraded to Win 7 32Bit and just for curiosity I've added the WHS folder "Music" to the WMP library. Guess what happened ?!? The library was build pretty fast (~2 files/second), nevertheless, the LAN has only 100 MBit/s (which was only used partially) and it's an old single core CPU machine with only 1.5 GB RAM. Really amazing, this version of WMP was able to do the job as expected with the same files I have trouble under Win 7 64Bit (both Home Premium versions).

Kind regards,
Joe

Indeed it is a strange issue, Joe, unfortunately, I do not see how I can be of any other help. Some parts of WMP included with 7 are still peculiar to me and I long stopped researching, thinking that it's just too full of bugs at times to be used properly.

Hi Gornot,

thanks for the reply. I have the same impression, that a bug is causing my issue.

I would be just curious if I am the only one with Win 7 HP 64Bit having this issue or whether it's a general issue ? Currently I'll let my HTPC run as long as possible a day to get the MP3s into the library. It helps running WMP in the background, as this tries to get the files read into the library shortly after starting the HTPC from Stand-By, whereas WMC does this somehow in the background...

Regards,
Joe

Hi,

I've found the issue. It was to whatever reason related to the personal user Music folder.

The directory
C:\User\xyz\Music
couldn't be acessed.

I clicked on the Music folder in the library of an Explorer window and under properties I've removed all folders. I've set back to standard locations and added the WHS folder.

Within WMP the personal folder was still not acessible and I tried to open it in the Explorer window under xyz - music. I've got an error message, that I am not allowed to open the folder and could do it by entering the admin password.

After this, the personal folder was OK under WMP (no unavailability issue displayed) and the files were read pretty fast into the library, as I would expect it.

I don't know, why the folder was restricted, but now it works...

Kind regards,
Joe
