can't play .mov files from WMC

for some reason i can't play any .mov files from inside WMC. i've downloaded a bunch from hd-trailers.net and apple trailers and when i try to play them in WMC i just get the "cannot play video" error.

these .mov files play just fine when i open them in both WMP and MPC-HC.

i'm running win7x64 with no codec packs installed, just ffdshow.
i really don't want to install any codec packs either, but i'm wondering if installing shark would be a necessity to get this working.

anyone have any ideas? the part that really confuses me is that they play fine in WMP but won't open in WMC...

i still can't get this to work... is installing a codec pack the only option? or is there a setting in ffdshow that i'm missing?

.mov is a standard codec in Win7. Installing an extra codec pack is not going to help. WMC is very capricious. There must be another problem. I would just use WMP or VLC.

is it a standard codec in win7x64?
i tried doing more testing with a trailer .mov from apple's site and got these results:
    MPC-HCx64 - plays fine
    WMPx32 - plays fine
    WMPx64 - cannot play video
WMC - cannot play video (i presume this is because WMC uses the x64 player?)

mov is NOT a codec, it is a container just like MKV is a container. Windows 7 is capable of splitting the container down to its audio/video contents (sometimes) but your system would still need the proper codecs to be able to playback these contents.

and this assumption is based on what knowledge?

Just because you fail to understand Media Center playback does not class the player as capricious.

of course this would be your choice given your lack of understanding concerning video playback in general , but you know what? This is the Media Center forum, not the VLC forum.

If WMP and VLC can play the video but Media Center cannot, it is DEFINATELY a codec problem.

BTW, Media Center DOES NOT use Windows Media Player for playback.

I dont even know if installing my codecs will help you but if you upload a sample mov file to mediafire.com and post the download url here, I can test it and tell you if my software can solve your problem, or not, without you even installing it to test its viability.

LOL, Shark it is obvious that you are the expert and I am a layman. But on my systems (x64 and x86) .mov files work perfectly well. But your insights are appreciated. It is never too late to learn something.

Btw: WMC is capricious - I have nothing but trouble with it - and that is independent of codecs. I deccided not to use it.

just go to apple and pick any trailer .mov file.
i have the same results with all of them.

is there any way for me to tell why it isn't playing in WMC? i'd rather figure out the problem than just throw codecs at it...
