| Windows 7: can't play .mov files from WMC |

can't play .mov files from WMC for some reason i can't play any .mov files from inside WMC. i've downloaded a bunch from hd-trailers.net and apple trailers and when i try to play them in WMC i just get the "cannot play video" error.
these .mov files play just fine when i open them in both WMP and MPC-HC.
i'm running win7x64 with no codec packs installed, just ffdshow.
i really don't want to install any codec packs either, but i'm wondering if installing shark would be a necessity to get this working.
anyone have any ideas? the part that really confuses me is that they play fine in WMP but won't open in WMC... | My System Specs |

.mov is a standard codec in Windows 7. Installing an extra codec pack is not going to help. WMC is very capricious. There must be another problem. I would just use WMP or VLC. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP, Dell, Gateway, Toshiba - 4 laptops and 2 desktops OS Vista, Windows7, Mint Mate, Zorin, Windows 8 CPU from 1.6GHz Duo to i7 Monitor(s) Displays 2x HP w2207 Keyboard with trackball - no mices Mouse Trackball mice Hard Drives 5x HDD, 7x SSD, 12x Externals Internet Speed DSL 6000 |

is it a standard codec in win7x64?
i tried doing more testing with a trailer .mov from apple's site and got these results:
MPC-HCx64 - plays fine
WMPx32 - plays fine
WMPx64 - cannot play video
WMC - cannot play video (i presume this is because WMC uses the x64 player?) | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number home built OS win 7 pro 64 CPU AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-MA790GP-UD4H Memory Kingston 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Graphics Card onboard: ATI Radeon HD3300 128MB DDR3 1333MHz Sound Card onboard Monitor(s) Displays 14" ELO flatpanel touchscreen, Sharp DT-510 DLP projector Screen Resolution 1024x768, 1280x720 PSU Rosewill RP550 550W Case COOLER MASTER Centurion 534 Hard Drives WD10EADS 1TB SATA, SAMSUNG 1TB SATA, Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3320613AS 320GB Internet Speed 20mb down, 2mb up cable Other Info AverDuet tv tuner PCI card, bluray drive, dvd burner drive |

If WMP and VLC can play the video but Media Center cannot, it is DEFINATELY a codec problem.
BTW, Media Center DOES NOT use Windows Media Player for playback.
I dont even know if installing my codecs will help you but if you upload a sample mov file to ************** and post the download url here, I can test it and tell you if my software can solve your problem, or not, without you even installing it to test its viability. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Selfbuilt OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit CPU i7 2600k Motherboard asus P8Z68-V LE Memory 16GB (4x4) corsair vengeance Graphics Card Intel HD3000 iGPU / AMD HD6870 1024MB Sound Card bitstreamed to an Onkyo 609 Monitor(s) Displays Asus VE278 27" LED / Bravia EX7 60" LED Screen Resolution native 1080p x2 Keyboard Dell Mouse logitech m505 PSU 650w Antec Case NZXT tempest evo Cooling air/stock Hard Drives 4x 2TB int. + 2x 2TB external and a SSD for the boot drive. LOL, Shark it is obvious that you are the expert and I am a layman. But on my systems (x64 and x86) .mov files work perfectly well. But your insights are appreciated. It is never too late to learn something.
Btw: WMC is capricious - I have nothing but trouble with it - and that is independent of codecs. I deccided not to use it. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number HP, Dell, Gateway, Toshiba - 4 laptops and 2 desktops OS Vista, Windows7, Mint Mate, Zorin, Windows 8 CPU from 1.6GHz Duo to i7 Monitor(s) Displays 2x HP w2207 Keyboard with trackball - no mices Mouse Trackball mice Hard Drives 5x HDD, 7x SSD, 12x Externals Internet Speed DSL 6000 |

i have the same results with all of them.
is there any way for me to tell why it isn't playing in WMC? i'd rather figure out the problem than just throw codecs at it... | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number home built OS win 7 pro 64 CPU AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3GHz Motherboard GIGABYTE GA-MA790GP-UD4H Memory Kingston 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Graphics Card onboard: ATI Radeon HD3300 128MB DDR3 1333MHz Sound Card onboard Monitor(s) Displays 14" ELO flatpanel touchscreen, Sharp DT-510 DLP projector Screen Resolution 1024x768, 1280x720 PSU Rosewill RP550 550W Case COOLER MASTER Centurion 534 Hard Drives WD10EADS 1TB SATA, SAMSUNG 1TB SATA, Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3320613AS 320GB Internet Speed 20mb down, 2mb up cable Other Info AverDuet tv tuner PCI card, bluray drive, dvd burner drive can't play .mov files from WMC problems?
