how to make WMC behaving as well as VLC

    Hi all,

I am a devoted WMC user. However, I am having massive problems to make WMC to play correctly all my video files.

    • Some AVI files do not play in WMC, but play in WMP without any audio
    • There is no audio when DVDs play
    • Subtitles are missing when playing AVI files

I have installed Shark007 codecs, which is a great package of codecs. Also, Shark007 is quite helpful giving advice in his forum. However, I do not manage to get the configuration right.

I have tried 3 different audio playback devices:

    • digital HDMI connection to TV.
    • digital SPDIF connection to external DAC.
    • digital USB connection to external DAC.

When I play the same files in VLC everything works as a charm, regardless of playback device or video file, subtitles or not.

So, if VLC can play everything flawless, WMC should be able to do it aswell?
How can I make WMC behaving properly?

    Cheers

For AVI files, choose to disable the DMO codecs on the SWAP TAB.
If your system is 64bit and you use Media Center, do this in the 64bit application.

DVD's have nothing to do with my codecs and should work.
If a setting from my app was interfering with the DVD's, pressing [Reset Alll] would correct it.

    Hi Shark007,

You are omnipresent in every single corner of the net!!!

Your codecs are not the problem. Shark007 is a great piece of work. Without your codecs I am having the same problems. However, I cannot find the right config to make WMC working as stable as VLC in my setup.

    Cheers

I got home after work and I did some tests.

-The AVI files are playing again:
If I apply the suggested Shark007 settings the solution was, as you suggested, to disable the DMO codecs on the SWAP TAB. This was caused by the suggested settings, I think, since the AVI files played also properly after doing a [Reset all].

-I don't know what I had tweaked before but the DVD sound when using the USB DAC came back after doing a RESET all. However, there are annoying crackles in the audio of some video files (not all). the SPDIF connection is still not playing sound for DVDs.

    Thanks!
