I'm running Windows 7 built 7100.
My windows media player will not connect to the internet to play videos. I can cut and paste a url into the open command line and it plays fine. But to launch the player itself I get a "can not connect to the internet " error message. Have dropped the firewall, changed the internet security settings and tried several other tweaks to no avail. I have installed real player and it works fine.
Any Ideas?

Thanks but I got it working. I have the windows firewall running and turned it off but that didn't work.
It started working after I lowered the security options in internet explorer.
Not sure which setting made it start working but I lowered the security settings to medium........and like magic it started working.....with the fire wall on.

yeah but now your security is lowered. might have been better to make an exception for wmp and leave the more strict rules in place

Back to the start of this thread..........
Had an un related problem and had to re install Windows 7.
Something is blocking windows media player 12 from starting. If I click on the media player icon within a web page I get an error message that says cannot connect to the internet. Real player works perfectly on the same web page. I have turned off the windows firewall, lowered all security settings and nothing works. I have wmp selected as the default player and all file types selected........
Any one have any ideas. Something is blocking access but with everything turned off I have no clue what it might be. HELP!
