Windows Media Player cannot connect to the server.

When trying to play .wmv files from http://tfcbt.musc.edu/ (there are many videos throughout the website, but for trial's sake, you can just click on the Introduction link and that should open an explorer window with a video) I get an error regarding Windows Media Player

"Windows Media Player cannot connect to the server. The server name might not be correct, the server might not be available, or your proxy settings might not be correct. "

Web Help avails Windows Media Player error C00D1198 and gives some suggestions that did not help.

I am able to access the videos from my desktop pc, but another desktop on the same network is unable to and I have been attempting with a laptop as well that is getting the same error.
I have a windows 7 pro and windows xp pro desktop that are working perfectly fine.
The problem pcs are both running windows 7. One is Pro x32 and the other is home x64.
All versions of WMP on all mentioned pcs are 12.0.7601.17514.
    There are no plugins enabled.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled WMP.
I have made exceptions for Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy - Home in the trusted sites for internet explorer. (which is version 8 for all machines)
I have set all security settings for IE8 to minimal.
I have set proxy servers to be determined automatically.
I have made a specific exception in windows firewall for all windows media programs.
I have even disabled the firewall completely through the services snap-in.
I have tried disabling UDP in WMP's Network Config.
I have set the proxy configuration in WMP to auto and now have it back on default after that was unsuccessful.

Most of the threads I was reading regarding this are old, but not on one of them did i find a solution.

Any new suggestions or proven solutions will be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Hi McDouglas,

Have you tried using a different browser? Firefox for example? I use Firefox and it works fine for me.
    Get More From Your Firefox
Mozilla Firefox - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Downloads

To get it to work on Firefox, you may need to download the ActiveX control pack which can be found at the link below.
Get Windows Media Player - Microsoft Windows

Below is a screenshot of the video being played on Firefox. It works perfectly well on this particular browser, so I recommend giving it a shot.

    Hope this helps,

Well, I had tried Firefox, and on the machines where it didn't play in IE, it wouldn't play in Firefox or Chrome either, however it did mention a missing plug-in and when i went to install it, it was Unidentified. Assuming it is the ActiveX plug-in you mentioned, I will install that and try it in Firefox tomorrow. I decided to stick with IE because of all the browsers, IE should be able to play a .wmv using WMP and on two of my machines, it works perfectly fine no matter what browser (Play in standalone with Firefox due to the missing plug-in). I'm starting to think it has something to do with access through the webfilter that wouldn't be avoided by shutting off windows and 3rd party firewalls.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Maybe, maybe... Anyway, try installing the ActiveX plug-in. It should help.

Well, I downloaded and installed the ActiveX control with no success. Using Firefox.. instead of it suggesting a plug-in is missing, it "connects" and is then "Ready" to play, however it will not play, and clicking play just has it 'Connecting....' then 'Ready' again. I also put the computers into the rack that bypasses the webfilter and that seemed to make no difference. By saving the link to desktop and using VLC as the default player, i'm getting the video to play, but considering there are myriad videos throughout the site, I'm hoping to find a better "work-around".

Thanks again for your help Jaidyn

Try restarting your computer after installing the plug-in. That worked for me.

I tried restarting. I upgraded Windows 7 to SP1, then from Home to Pro. Still the same issue. The only way to play it was with VLC. Setting that to default though and clicking the <Play in standalone mode> option seems to work well enough without having to save every video.
In trying to figure out what's causing me to be able to play it, i logged in on my machine with basic privileges and i was unable to play it in IE or FF unless I used VLC Viewer. So I'm even more baffled as to the cause because I don't see how any AD privileges would have any affect on whether or not WMP can play a .wmx hosted by a site on the Pass List for all users.
I am just gonna call it a loss at this point and install VLC on twenty some odd machines that will be watching the videos.

    /Tips hat.
