How to get value into FLAC metadata so it is visible in WMP

I am looking for help on something specific please :

In the Library view of Windows Media Player, there are column headings such as 'Album', 'Title', 'Length', etc..
If you right click on that bar, select Choose Columns.. then scroll down in that widget and select 'Subgenre' ...

Now you have an extra column in the Library view with this name.

Question : What (3rd party probably) tag editor for FLAC audio files do you recommend that would allow me to edit my FLAC files such that I could populate this specific field?

I tried it in Foobar2000 on my Vista laptop and it was so easy. I tried on my Win 7 laptop and it doesn't work at all. When I'm done using Foobar, I open WMP and open the FLAC file in there, but the Subgenre column remains empty (unlike on my Vista laptop).

If you already use the popular ones such as mp3tag, etc.. I would love to know if this works for you on Win 7 and the steps I need to take using the editor tool in the app. to get it to work.

    Thanks!

My standard recommendation is simple....don't use WMP....lol. If you're already familiar with foobar2000 and MP3Tag, then stick with what works.

WMP doesn't have any built-in tag support for FLAC, which explains why the Subgenre field (and all other fields) stay empty. To add FLAC tag support to WMP, you can install the WMP Tag Plus plug-in.

Note that after installing the plug-in, existing FLAC files in WMP's library need to be re-added for their tags to show up.

No, only in WMP For Explorer, other software would have to be installed (a FLAC Property Handler).

Also, with WMP Tag Plus, you can directly edit the tags in WMP's library without the need to use Mp3tag.

OK Tim's replies explain why it works on my Vista laptop but not my Win 7 laptop. I have WMP Tag Plus installed on the Vista laptop, hence the support for FLAC in WMP there and the process working fine with Foobar2000 editing.

I cannot install it on my Win 7 laptop as I am running 64 bit OS and 64 bit WMP 11 and don't have ability to run XP virtualisation on it.

SOOOOO - I am still asking you guys for a solution to the original problem.

why dont you use the x32 wmp ,as i see no difference, i have mp3 tag plus installed on a x64 pc using x32 wmp and it works fine.

Oh, you're of course the same person who also asked for help in the official WMP Tag Plus thread - sorry for not noticing earlier. But you should have mentioned in your first post that you're using 64-bit WMP 11 on Windows 7

    1. What exactly will that download enable me to do?

    2. I went through so much pain just to get rid of WMP12 and get WMP11 x64 on my Win 7 laptop, I feel like I aged double! If you have a cast-iron, 100% guaranteed method for me changing my 64 bit WMP to 32 bit, I'm open to reading your step by step guide :)

the property handler download will enable the flac files you have to show albumart on the file in windows explorer and it will show the tag information at the bottom of the explorer window enabling you to change it as you can already with mp3s, use it you will see the difference,
as for changing the wmp x64 to x86, try this
go to a mps3 file and right click it ,select open with and then choose default program select wmp ( its possible there will be two showing x64 and x86) ,it should be the x86 ,however you could browse to it ,it can be found in c: program files x86 /windows media player . then select the wmp .exe
or try start menu / default programs / in the window that opens select wmp and set as default program.
sorry for not posting sooner, hectic xmas stuff going on with 4 kids.
