Compress recorded TV for Zune & WP7

I recently acquired a Nokia Lumia and am exploring what I can and can't do with the phone. It occurred to me that I might be able to sync recorded TV to the phone. After some fiddling around in the Zune software I added the Recorded TV folder to the "Managed Folder" tab, and all of the recorded TV shows appeared in Zune. The problem is that the files are far too large to sync to the phone, which only has 8GB of storage. Is there some way to reduce the file size to something manageable, keep the WMC metadata and allow playback on the WP7 Lumia? All of the TV shows are in SD format, if that makes a difference.

The Zune software should transcode the videos into smaller bites automatically for the device...I recommend trying it first and see what it does...

That's what I was hoping would happen, but it hasn't so far. Manually dragging and dropping the video to the phone icon doesn't seem to work either.
