How to convert .wtv files

I base my thinking on the fact that most PC's do not even have TV Tuners, that those who have TV Tuners just want to watch and record TV for playback on their PC at a later date, and that most PC users have no idea what a codec even is. It will be intriguing to see the poll results.

I have been recording off air dtvb for a few years now and I have always used the application that came with the TV tuner card (Lifeview dtvb hybrid I have actually got 2 of them) the application that came with them used to work great recording MPEG2 files in Vista and XP but lo and behold it wont work in Windows 7, but update supplied a Driver for it. I cant find their website to see if there is a new app for Windows 7 I think they have gone bust. So I will be looking for a new tuner that has an application that works in Windows 7 and records MPEG2 instead of trying to use Windows media centre and this stupid .wtv file format and conversions.

Hello Macsbeach98, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

There are paid programs that claim to work with 7 (Cyberlink for example). Costs run from $40 to over $600 USD. I have read other posts about video file converters that will produce DVD quality video ready to burn to disk, both paid and open source.

Windows 7 and Media Center are the first PC based video combination to have reliably recorded my favorite TV shows and movies. What is missing is a tool to save the recordings in a format compatible with my video editing software.

I would be interested in what you end up using?

... Too tired to look through the thread, but to answer the thread title, you can convert .wtv files with Windows Live Movie Maker. Sorry if this has been answered already.

I use Cyberlink PowerProducer. Works withs both dvr-ms and wtv files. Converts it to mpg format.

I have got power producer its the one that comes with DVD Burners so I would say its not the complete version I will have to give that a try tonight thanks for the tip

No problems. Just to let you know, there is no actual converting options, you just sort of upload the files and the converting is done automatically for you and puts the converted file in the cyberlink folder. its quite fast as well. It converted a 2.32GB file in about 1 minute.
