Which format is better? .wtv or .mpg?
Hello Delpheno, and welcome to Windows Seven Forums! Its nice to meet you.
You are asking for an opinion. Most everyone will have one and most will be different. The advantage of the .wtv format is all the extra info included in the data stream. The disadvantage for .wtv is the huge size of the files, making it impossible to burn to a DVD disk.
The advantage of mpg is its small size, much easier to transfer to DVD. Windows 7 will convert your .wtv files to the (Vista) format of .dvr-ms, allowing you to use other software to edit your video, and convert it to mpg. But if you can record in mpg, then you can edit and burn your videos with out the extra steps of conversion.
WMC is the first TV recording solution I have been able to use successfully. I have several of my favorite movies saved and can enjoy viewing them at my convenience. My hope is the next WMC from the Retail version of 7 will have more functionality.
Happy surfing!
