Media player [Quicktime] buffers every 5 seconds of a 60 second video

So far I have followed these instructions to get the QuickTime video to stop buffering. None have worked.

For Windows Media Player version 7.0 and later:
On the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the Network tab.
Under Protocols, clear UDP.

I also did this:

For Windows Media Player version 7.0 and later:
On the Tools menu, click Options.
Click the Performance tab.
Under Network buffering choose Buffer -- change the time.
I changed from every 5 seconds to every 60. The video still buffers after 5 seconds. I also rebooted after trying each suggestion.

Perhaps it's not a buffering issue? More to the point -- the video starts to "scramble" after 5 seconds. It's specific to the laptop because this does not happen on the PC.

Edit: Another detail -- this is for a PowerPoint presentation. It does not "scramble" when I view the video in edit mode, but it does "scramble" (if that's the right word) when I run the slideshow. I'm also running the native file, as opposed to a link to the Internet. The room I'm using for the presentation doesn't have Internet connection.
