convert files to play on external dvd player

Hi, I need some help if possible.
I'have down loaded some films from the net which I want to burn to disc and play on a dvd player away from the pc.
Most of them will unpack and allow me to burn successfully. However I have some which will only play on a pc dvd. These are showing as mkv files. I s it possible to convert them and burn them in Windows DVD Maker. I have tried but can't get the files into dvd maker. I'm not sure what the difference is but when I burn to disc the only option is a very quick process but others seem to go into ' make a dvd ' and takes quite a long time but gives perferct results. Thanks for you time,Mike

Hi, Thanks for your reply and tip. It downloaded like a dream and so far has worked perfectly with everything I've put through it. Problem solved.
