WMC + TBS 8920 not finding channels on new PC.

    Hello All.

Just bought a new PC and all is great until I installed my old TBS 8920 tuner card into PCI slot..using latest drivers.

    UK Freesat

I ran WMC for the 1st time and went through the set-up. Media centre appeared to find the tuner card and gave a signal strength of around 90% (satellite). After I finished the instillation(no problems reported) none of the channels WMC found worked....WMC reported no signal found when trying to play a channel. I then tried a manual full scan which found no channels....I'd have expected to find a couple of 100.

Then tried a single transponder scan....Put the frequency details into WMC and it returned a good signal strength....all bars were green...but as before it didn't find the channels.

Is there some setting I'm missing?

Tested the card on my old PC just to see if it was okay and it worked without a problem.

I'm not the most technically minded person.

I've added my system spec in my profile and any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated...Thank you.

Hiyya mate where did you get the drivers from as I prefer to get the manufacturer site ones rather than rely on the Windows Device manager search.

    Cheers for the reply.

The drivers installed are from the TBS site....link you posted.

I read somewhere that there maybe a change I need to make in the BIOS to make the PCI slot work correctly with the TBS card....something to do with different versions of PCI slots. I hope that isn't the case as the BIOS and me aren't compatible.

Have had a search around but cannot find any ref to the BIOS having to configure the PCI slots for a TV tuner, which I see is EUFI and from using it on my Asus board know it is fairly comprehensive.

There were quite a few that said that the BIOS automatically set the slot for the tuner, and most just aid just plug straight in.

One ref I did find was is the tuner card compatible with the board and yours being an older one you say? maybe not compatible.

Sorry mate but I cannot be any more specific than that as I really am not that well genned up on EUFI. I id look up the board and maybe you could try downloading the drivers again?

I see out here the cards are reasonably expensive but do you think you would be better off with a new one??

Thanks a lot for your help

I looked at the link you posted but I really don't know what drivers I need....The joy of being a PC muttonhead.

I think I'll give it a bash in the other PCI slot and see if that helps...I don't see why that should be any different...but you never know. If that doesn't work then I'll look around for a new card. Only thing I'm concerned about in doing that is that the same problem occurs. Damn these newfangled motherboards LOL

Is a PCI-E slot a better option than getting a PCI slot card?

    Thanks again for the help

Hum now I am not really that genned up up on the slots but looking at the boards specs maybe it would be worth trying that card in both slots and see if it works now it does say that the slot PCIEX16 should be kept free for a GPU so if it works in the other one then ok.

The drivers it wouldn't hurt to download the lot from the site to be honest at least you know you would be bang up to date. A word of caution though I would be very careful about doing anything with a BIOS update best left alone if the machine is running ok

NB If you are thinking of contacting Gigabyte for support I must forewarn you it is a long and very tedious process which they will require motherboard, version, serial and product numbers by the bucket load and the response is not always what you might expect and some time coming.

Have tried putting the card in the 2nd PCI slot and no luck. Same problem as my original post. Everything appears to work but WMC wont find any channels when scanning.

I'll go back to the shop that built the machine and see if they can find any problems with the slots.

Put the card back in my old PC and did a scan....new channels were found. So I'm fairly sure the card is working OK. So I assume there must be a problem with the installed version of WMC or a problem with the motherboard. The PC is running perfectly...so I don't know if there is anything wrong with the motherboard. All very frustrating. :)

    Thanks again for your help.

EDIT: Went down to the shop and explained the whole situation to the guy....He was flummoxed....Couldn't think of a reason for the problem. He suggested I install a WMC alternative to see if that works. I'll give Mediaportal a try..hope its as easy as WMC to set-up

Tried using TBSviewer and Mediaportal and the same problem occurred...good signal strength but no channels found.

I then tried using my old USB DVB-T tuner and that worked fine....but no HD channels.

Thinking about getting this card...PCI-Express...but I'm worried that the same problem may occur and it will be a wast of money.

Well mate the shop fellow sounds pretty ordinary - as usual maybe the best option is to get that card and try if it doesn't work then maybe the mobo is suspect

Driver TBS Download Center-Update the Latest Window & Linux Driver

The mobo I am guessing the chipset driver again if you haven't done it already

    GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1155 - GA-Z77-DS3H (rev. 1.0)

Just a bit of info if you try to get support from Gigabyte be prepared to have ALL the numbers board, serial, version etc etc ad nauseum and details when you apply for support which I have to tell you isn't that crash hot anyway - it is a very LONG, tedious and long winded process with them.

I bought the TBS 6922 DVB-S2 PCIe and everything works perfectly. I can't for the life of me figure out why the TBS 8920 PCI failed to work.

    ICit2lol...thanks for your help.
