You can set the recording time in Media Center, and then close it. The Media Center user interface does not need to be running in order for a recording to start. The recordings are done by a background service.
You really should look into the MCE Standby Tool that was linked in post #2.

You can install it, and choose all the default settings. It will set all the sleep settings for you. You can then uninstall it, or... if you would like to use the active features of MCE Standby Tool (MST), don't uninstall it.
If sleep/wake still doesn't work after installing MST, then you may have other problems that can be diagnosed using the powercfg tool that is built-into windows ("powercfg -lastwake" and others).
