Windows 7: Windows 7 Media Center - Black screen!

16 Nov 2009   #11

I have seen Catalyst become flaky, but only when the motherboard had onboard graphics and the BIOS settings/system settings in Windows were incorrect, for example having both graphic hardware items running or even having the drivers for the onboard installed when using an ATI Video Card. Disabling the onboard graphics in both BIOS and Windows prior to driver installation cured this for me.

The PC is a 3 year old Dell Dimension E510 media center edition. I haven't touched anything except the RAM. Have been running XP and media center in XP with no problems for years. I have been able to watch live tv and record tv with few problems. I just did a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit and everything works great except for this media center.

Intel Pentium D dual Core 3.2Ghz
4 GB Ram
video card: Radeon X300 128MB "Hyper Memory"
TV Tuner: NEC Angel II

I went to the Angel II website and downloaded the newest driver which is for Vista 64 bit. Didn't help. Not sure if the video card driver is problem or not, I would think if this were the case I could atleast open media center just not watch TV. I may be wrong! Please let me know what my problems may be.
I'm having the same problem ever since I tried to install new drivers for another USB TV Tuner, now rendering the orginal TV tuner useless on this computer (ACER L320 running Windows 7 Home Premium).

I've done a fresh install of Windows 7. Reinstalled the driver from the CD accompanying the TV USB Stick, connected the Stick, scanned and found 28 channels, but unfortunately I just get a black screen when I try and watch live TV (even though the channel info, EPG, Dolby info, etc all show when I hover the mouse over the bottom of the screen). I can drag the back and forth but all to no avail as there is nothing on the screen and no sound either.

There is no problem playing previously recorded TV programms which I transferred back to this computer, nor with the "Landscapes" demo.

When I connect the TV USB Stick to my laptop, there are no problems with playing or recording live TV.

By the way, the TV USB Stick is a simple one which came as a promotion with Windows 7. There doesn't appear to be any brand on it though the install of the drivers did mention Realtek if I remember correctly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Windows 8.1 x64

I turned on the hibernation option in the power settings. I think my computer went into hibernation during the recording of a TV program. I turned the hibernation option off and my screen returned to normal. Hope this will help you.
