Nope, the utility didn't fix it.

My files are different versions. Some are 16667, including the media player .exe file, some other 16385, namely the wm_setup.exe file. It's really weird.

I think it's about time for a Repair Install you would have been done with this a while ago.

Your worries about drivers and data should be answered with this note at the top of the tutorial...

Well looks like there's no end to this crap...

No such thing as an "install now" or upgrade option. Nothing. I've done reinstalls with XP a billion times so I'm familiar with the procedure. Just doesn't seem to work for me. So what do I do now?

Are you booting from the dvd? You need to run it from an admin account once you've already booted up.
